Construction on the $1 billion expansion and renovation of Terminal 5 began in March 2019. The project will open in phases throughout 2023.
Seven new gates opened in the extended East Concourse in summer 2022, and ten renovated gates opened in the West Concourse in October 2022 as the new home for Delta Air Lines, which shifted operations from the carrier's long-time home in Terminal 2. Delta's move also included the construction of a new Delta Sky Club, located between Gates M11 and M14, with more than four times the capacity of its former club in Terminal 2.

In May 2022, the Chicago City Council approved the largest set of concessions agreements at O'Hare in more than a decade. Local favorites like Butcher and the Burger, Sparrow Coffee, Bar Siena, Hampton Social and more are coming to the expanded amenity spaces in Terminal 5. Mobile ordering from food and retail concessions with the option for gate-side delivery is also available throughout the terminal.
The approved agreements, which also included retail offerings in Terminal 5, will achieve an Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (ACDBE) participation rate of 40%, exceeding the CDA's goal of 32% and the nationwide goal of 10% set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
