Terminal 5 Expansion and Modernization

Renovations at T5 Near Completion

Construction on the $1 billion expansion and renovation of Terminal 5 began in March 2019. The project will open in phases throughout 2023.

Seven new gates opened in the extended East Concourse in summer 2022, and ten renovated gates opened in the West Concourse in October 2022 as the new home for Delta Air Lines, which shifted operations from the carrier's long-time home in Terminal 2. Delta's move also included the construction of a new Delta Sky Club, located between Gates M11 and M14, with more than four times the capacity of its former club in Terminal 2.

Upon completion, the Terminal 5 project will:

Add a total of 10 new gates to provide 25 percent more gate capacity, improving efficiency and reducing delays
Increase passenger amenity space by 85%
Expand the existing building by approximately 350,000 square feet
Renovate more than 750,000 square feet of the existing building
Add more airline lounge space
Add more concessions and passenger amenities for an improved dining and shopping experience
Enlarge, reconfigure, and refurbish interior spaces
Integrate new furniture and new technology throughout the facility
Expand security checkpoints to 13
Reconfigure and improve immigration and customs screening
Replace the existing 25-year-old Baggage Handling System to increase handling efficiencies
Provide a new, six-story parking garage with additional short and long-term parking adjacent to the Terminal 5 building
Multiple roadway enhancements to increase lanes and alleviate traffic bottlenecks
An expanded curbside area to enhance drop-off and to help passengers move more easily between Terminals 1, 2, and 3

Concessions

In May 2022, the Chicago City Council approved the largest set of concessions agreements at O'Hare in more than a decade. Local favorites like Butcher and the Burger, Sparrow Coffee, Bar Siena, Hampton Social and more are coming to the expanded amenity spaces in Terminal 5. Mobile ordering from food and retail concessions with the option for gate-side delivery is also available throughout the terminal.

The approved agreements, which also included retail offerings in Terminal 5, will achieve an Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (ACDBE) participation rate of 40%, exceeding the CDA's goal of 32% and the nationwide goal of 10% set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

These concessionaires will open in phases at Terminal 5 throughout 2023:

BLVD & Branch, operated by Marshall Retail Group at Terminal 5 East Concourse

Bar Siena, operated by Chicago Hospitality Partners at Terminal 5 East Concourse
FarmAir's Market, operated by Chicago Hospitality Partners at Terminal 5 West Concourse
Six Points Market, operated by Marshall Retail Group at Terminal 5 East Concourse

New Art Installations Coming in 2023

As part of the O’Hare International Airport Terminal 5 Expansion Project, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) are commissioning the largest single acquisition of works by Chicago artists by the City of Chicago in the last 30 years.

This $3.5 million project presents a unique opportunity to invest in Chicago artists and creative professionals while providing international visitors a dynamic and welcoming first impression of our city.

Nineteen commissions featuring more than 20 artists are planned across three critical sites:
